Sally's story

I had a stroke at the age of 45 in December 2020. The stroke left me with left sided hemiplegia. After being discharged from hospital, I started working with Plymouth Neurophysio's Becky and Charlotte, who visited me at home to assess my situation. The initial focus of our sessions was helping me to get back on my left leg and  to improve my balance. My first impression of Becky and Charlotte was firstly, how knowledgeable they were about brain injuryand stroke and secondly how positive they both were and how they gave me hope, not false hope but  hope that a future post-stroke was possible and I would get some mobility back.

Charlotte became my regular physio and we have always worked hard on whatever my current goal may be for example walking outside, walking without my stick and so on, in addition to the regular sessions at home, Charlotte has encouraged me to do other things such as joining a gym, swimming and I think she has plans for a gentle spin class ! Charlotte has become a very important member of my support network.  she works me hard in our sessions but we also have a lot of laughs and I look forward to seeing her every week. I also work with her colleague Mike in more gym based sessions which I really enjoy. Mike pushes me just enough to make it tiring but enjoyable and  as an avid gym goer before my stroke these sessions are really important to me.

Charlotte, Mike and I have regular team meetings to discuss my goals and ensure we are all working on the same page which is important. Two years post stroke I’m beginning  to accept life will never be the same as it was before but I am more hopeful and positive about what the future has in store. I can walk outside with a stick and have generally more confidence to give things a go, this is largely thanks to Charlotte and her enthusiastic ‘ can do ‘ attitude. I can definitely say that I would have no hesitation in recommending Plymouth Neurophysio to anybody who needs their specialist skills.
