Spinal Cord Injury

The Plymouth Neurophysio multi-disciplinary team are highly experienced in treating individuals with all levels of spinal cord injury.

We are able to assess and treat clients in their own home or in our accessible clinic spaces (Plymouth and Exeter) or in a gym or activity centre, hydro pool, school or a place of work.

We understand the challenges faced when living with a spinal cord injury and are always here to listen and advise. We appreciate that having a health professional that you really know and trust is incredibly important. We always work in a safe and confidential way and will listen closely to a client's individual needs and goals.

Spinal Cord Injury - Plymouth NeurophysioWe are well placed to advise on mobility equipment, wheelchair and seating needs, neuro technology and orthotics and have close contacts with wheelchair and orthotics services. We are able to discuss other areas of spinal cord injury management and will draw on our clinical experience as well as liaising with other health professionals as needed.

Training and supervision is provided to family members and care & support teams in exercise and stretching programmes, standing programmes and positioning techniques. This ensures that effective postural management and daily exercise programmes are safe and effective. We are always available to respond to any questions or queries as they arise and will provide written information and guidelines to assist with the process.

We are able to assess, treat and help clients with respiratory problems or those who are reliant on respiratory equipment or ventilators for breathing.

Significant help is also provided to clients in managing their pain levels, tissue viability and spasms / spasticity. This may often change over time and we are well placed to liaise closely with a client's GP or Rehabilitation Consultant to achieve optimal outcomes.

We are passionate about facilitating ways to help clients to return to sporting and leisure activities and are able to assist with sourcing and trialling leisure activities that may be of interest. We work alongside clients to find safe and flexible ways to engage in physical activity; be it wheelchair sports, yoga, cycling or watersports. Where appropriate, we work alongside services such as Backup Trust, FreeTrike Cycling, Adventure Therapy or other organisations.

Plymouth Neurophysio have close links with spinal centres, especially Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre in Salisbury, and we can assist with the transition home from these centres. We are also very experienced with the setting up and monitoring of FES equipment, including the RT300 cycle and the L300 foot drop system.

Please do get in touch to discuss your needs or how we can help your client or family member and we will be very happy to provide further information.
