Here at Plymouth Neurophysio, we strive to keep up to date with the latest technologies and orthotics, that might benefit our clients in their everyday lives and rehabilitation.

Today in clinic we had a visit from the lovely and very knowledgeable, Sarah O’Leary Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist, representing a company called DM Orthotics. We contacted Sarah for advice regarding one of our clients who suffers with Ataxia. Ataxia is usually caused by damage to part of the brain called the cerebellum or its connections. The cerebellum controls muscle coordination.

Our Neuro Physio, James, has knowledge of their Lycra garments (Dynamic Movement Orthoses), he thought this might be of benefit to his client in aiding her everyday movements, improving quality of life.

DM Orthotics carries out a clinical assessment to determine which Orthoses they feel would be most suitable for each person. The garments are made to measure and fitted by them. They use a specially designed compression fabric which is soft, flexible, they help realign the body and influence both muscle tone and the proprioceptive system. They can be used for a range of conditions.

Our client tried a few of the garments on to understand how they might feel when worn. James and Sarah observed how she felt walking in them and whether there was any immediate effect just from that short period wearing them.  A decision was made for our client to trial these items for a few physioIMG_0877 (002).jpg sessions, to establish which of the garments she feels is going to benefit her specifically. If this is found to be beneficial she will go ahead and have a custom-made garment manufactured. Within clinic during this session there was a notable improvement in her walking. James will continue with his observations over the next few sessions.
