As the new Therapy Service Administrator at Plymouth Neurophysio, I attended one of our Hydrotherapy sessions held at Woodlands School Plymouth. I wanted to see the pool and observe the physio sessions conducted that day by James our Neuro Physiotherapist and Megan our Sports Therapist/rehab assistant.

Plymouth Hydrotherapy 1
The hydrotherapy pool which is located within Woodlands school in Whitleigh, Plymouth, is such a great facility. It is equipped to aid access into the pool with wide steps, a handrail, a chair and overhead hoist, and a viewing platform with good shower/changing facilities. The pool is beautifully warm too with the temperature at 34\C. There is good accessible parking outside. Plymouth Neurophysio holds one-to-one sessions each Friday at 3:30pm to 5:00pm during term time.

What is hydrotherapy you may ask? It’s a specialist form of physiotherapy which involves performing treatments and exercises, with a hydrotherapy trained therapist. A hydro pool must be heated between 33C to 36C.

It was a great experience to see the team in action with their clients. James assisting one of his clients who has a spinal injury, with stretching and movements to relieve and reduce neurological spasms. On speaking with James's client, he finds the hydro sessions of great benefit, and wishes he had his own hydro pool, something they are aiming for him in his future rehabilitation.

James’s next session was helping his client who has suffered with Functional Neurological Disorder impacting her walking and balance. James was taking her through different progressive exercises, helping strengthen the connection between the brain and muscle. It was lovely to see her with a smile on her face, as she felt she was improving during the session.

Megan was helping one of her younger clients diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, with his physio exercises strengthening his weak right side. As he is a child, Megan tailored the physio for him, by playing games in the pool with floats and balls keeping him focused.  He seemed to be enjoying the session and it was clear to see he has built a good rapport with Megan and he particularly enjoyed pretending to shoot her with the swimming noodle. It was a really interesting to watch the team at work and so positive seeing their clients progressing as a result of the teams knowledge and training.
